Case Study:
Dishoom Restaurant – Kensington

Dishoom Restaurant Kensington - Bars & Restaurants by CGA Integration

Outline

An homage to two of Bombay’s loveliest stories: Art Deco and Jazz, Dishoom Kensington, the 200-cover restaurant on Derry Street just off Kensington High Street, occupies a corner of the iconic Art Deco Barkers building. A single story restaurant with a double height main dining room and a range of ceiling finishes, Dishoom Kensington is the sixth restaurant in the Dishoom family which are based on the Irani cafes of Mumbai, the last four of which have had the audio designed and installed by CGA Integration.

Challenges

Every Dishoom is unique, yet each has to maintain the same Dishoom audio footprint. This ensures that every Dishoom restaurant feels and sounds the same, delivering Brand continuity across the growing estate. Dishoom Kensington is the first Dishoom to have live music. There is a first floor stage overlooking the main dining space which features the house jazz band at weekends. CGA had to be mindful of the audio requirements for live music in the sound system design. In addition, CGA worked with the appointed creative production company to ensure that audio facilities were in place to deliver immersive theatre productions on the stage for the restaurant launch.

Technical

Low ceilings, toilets and booths have been covered by EV Evid ceiling speakers, all finished in a RAL colour to match the painted ceilings ensuring minimum visual impact. On the open beam ceilings, EV Evid speakers were mounted within the ceiling details to give the best audio coverage whilst delivering minimal visual impact. The audio for the stage is augmented with a pair of bass bins mounted on the balcony to give a full band sound. The double height ceiling of the main dining space has EV Evid speakers set into the acoustic ceiling, creating well balanced sound without reverberation or unwanted reflection. CGA Integration also supplied a basic sound mixer, monitors, DI boxes, microphones and stands to facilitate the in house band. Ease of staff control of the sound systems was delivered through wall mounted controls at the entrance and main floor waiter stations, all wired back to a central AV & IT rack. These were the same as those installed by CGA in other Dishoom sites and were programmed using the same configuration, thus generating familiarity to any staff moving between Dishoom sites. The systems installed also have the added reassurance of remote network support from CGA.

Response

Chris Gunton Managing Director of CGA commented “we are delighted to be working with the Dishoom team again, building long term relationships with our clients is at the heart of the CGA business. It gives us the opportunity to truly understand what each customer needs, which ensures that we offer them the best fit latest developments that this fast moving industry has to offer”. Brian Trollip Director of Operations and Business Development at Dishoom added “CGA Integration have installed sound systems which deliver both excellent quality sound and ease of operation, through ensuring consistency across multiple Dishoom venues. This means that staff are familiar with the systems operation irrespective of which Dishoom they are working in”.
